Spreading Kindness Across the Oasis on the Plains

Here in Colby, Kansas, we already know something special: community matters.
We wave at each other on the street. We show up for local events. We pack the stands at tournaments. We support our neighbors’ businesses.
That’s why Acts of Kindness Week feels right at home here.
This week is a reminder that even in a town known for being friendly, we can be intentional about spreading kindness just a little further.
What Is Acts of Kindness Week?
Kindness here might look like:
Holding the door open at the grocery store
Checking in on a neighbor after a windy I-70 day
Thanking a local server, teacher, or first responder
Supporting one of our small businesses
Writing a note of appreciation to someone at Colby Community College
Visiting and thanking the team at Prairie Museum of Arts & History for preserving our story
Kindness in Colby isn’t flashy.. it’s heartfelt.
And it’s already part of who we are.
How Can You Participate This Week?
Here are some simple ways to spread kindness right here at home:
💛 For Individuals

Leave an encouraging note on someone’s windshield.
Compliment three people today.
Pay for the person behind you in line.
Send a message to someone you haven’t talked to in a while.
🏡 For Families
Bake treats and deliver them to a neighbor.
Create “Kindness Cards” and hand them out around town.
Pick up litter at a local park or along a walking path.
Volunteer together for a local cause.
🎒 For Students & Youth
Start a kindness wall at school.
Write thank-you letters to teachers.
Invite someone new to sit with you.
Perform one intentional act of kindness every day this week.
💬 A Message from the Executive Director
As the Executive Director of the Colby Convention & Visitors Bureau, I have the privilege of meeting visitors, business owners, students, families, and community leaders every single day.
One thing always stands out — the heart of Colby.
Kindness is already part of who we are. It’s in the way we welcome travelers off I-70. It’s in the way we support our schools, our events, and our local businesses. It’s in the way we show up for one another.

This week, I encourage each of you to take that heart and be intentional with it.
Commit to one act of kindness each day. Reach out to someone who might need
encouragement. Support a local business. Offer patience. Offer grace.
Let’s make Acts of Kindness Week something that doesn’t just pass by. Let’s make it a reminder of what makes Colby special.
Together, we can continue building a community that feels welcoming, supportive, and proud, for both our residents and the visitors who pass through.
Thank you for being part of what makes Colby the Oasis on the Plains.
