Chasing History: Seeing the Big Boy Steam Locomotive in Western Kansas

There are some sights you simply never forget, and seeing Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy No. 4014 roll across the Kansas prairie is definitely one of them.

As the Executive Director of the Colby Convention & Visitors Bureau, I had the opportunity to make the short drive west to Grainfield, Kansas, to witness this

incredible piece of American history in person. I was fortunate enough to have my nephews in town and bring them with.. as one of them LOVES choo-choos, as he would say! With Grainfield located just a few miles from Colby, it was an experience too special to miss.

The moment the whistle echoed across the open prairie, hundreds of people lined the tracks with cameras in hand, eager to catch a glimpse of the world's largest operating steam locomotive. Watching the massive engine slowly approach, surrounded by clouds of steam and the unmistakable sound of its powerful pistons, was like stepping back in time.

Built in 1941 to haul heavy freight over the Wasatch Mountains during World War II, Big Boy No. 4014 is one of only 25 locomotives ever constructed. Today, it is the only operational Big Boy in the world, lovingly restored by Union Pacific and traveling the country as a moving tribute to America's railroad heritage. This summer's tour celebrates the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary while giving communities a rare chance to experience living history.

What made this visit even more special was seeing families, railroad enthusiasts, and curious travelers gather together along the tracks. Young children watched in amazement while longtime rail fans shared stories of trains they remembered from decades ago. It was a reminder that moments like these bring communities together and create memories that span generations.

One of the best parts about living in Colby is that incredible experiences like this are often just a short drive away. Whether you're exploring historic attractions, attending community events, or chasing a once-in-a-lifetime locomotive, Northwest Kansas is full of hidden adventures waiting to be discovered.

If you ever have the chance to see Big Boy No. 4014 in person, don't pass it up. Pictures simply can't capture the size, the sound, or the feeling of watching this historic giant thunder across the Kansas plains.

Sometimes the best adventures are found just down the road—and this was certainly one of them.
