Colby may feel like the heart of northwest Kansas, but it’s also been home to talent from all across the world. Check out this article to learn about two of the international students who chose to sign with Colby Community College. 🌍🏀

For Elia (#12), who grew up in London, and Olivia (#5), who is from Sweden, basketball has been more than just a sport — it has been a passport, an opportunity, and a dream in motion. And now, that journey has led them right here to Colby Community College, just in time to host Regionals on March 7th.
Different Beginnings, Same Passion

Elia first picked up a basketball at 12 or 13 years old after her junior high coach encouraged her to try out. In London, she describes basketball culture as small — “everybody knows everyone.” It’s tight-knit and community-driven.
Olivia’s journey started even earlier. She began playing at age 5 after her mom introduced her to the game. In Sweden, basketball is more tactical — focused on set plays and structure — while she says the U.S. game is more physical and influenced by big college and high school culture.
Two different countries. Two different styles of play. One shared love for the game.
Why Colby?
For Elia, it came down to connection.
After speaking with the Head Coach, Darin Spence, she felt like Colby was where she needed to be. That conversation gave her confidence that this was the right step.

Olivia’s reason was simple and direct — basketball. She came to compete, grow, and take her game to the next level.
What surprised both of them?
The strength of Colby’s athletic program.
Elia said she didn’t expect just how good the basketball and sports programs would be. Olivia was struck by the sports community and small-town environment, calling it a “home away from home.”
Culture Shock — with the Western Community
London is known for its diversity and blend of cultures, which Elia says people everywhere should know and appreciate.
Olivia says if there’s one thing Colby residents should know about Sweden, it’s the candy and “FIKA,” a Swedish tradition of taking time for coffee and a sweet treat. Maybe Sweden is onto something here...
But perhaps the most Kansas answer of all?
When asked their favorite local experience so far, both had the same one-word answer:
The rodeo.

From London streets and Swedish traditions to western arenas and rodeo nights... Colby has clearly left its mark.
Growth on and off the Court >>>
Both athletes spoke about how much they’ve grown this season.
Elia, a 2nd-year here, described her time at CCC as “very eventful,” saying she’s learned a lot about herself as a player. Representing Colby feels rewarding to her because she knows not everyone gets the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Olivia, a 1st-year, said her experience has been good and different from her role back home. She feels proud representing CCC and appreciates the athletic environment and support from other sports teams.
There’s gratitude in both of their voices. And that gratitude shows up every time they step on the court.
Big Dreams Ahead
Elia hopes to continue playing professionally and possibly enter the criminal justice field.
Olivia wants to play professionally somewhere in Europe and continue playing as long as possible.
But before those next chapters begin, there’s something big happening right here in Colby.
